The pump is only one part of the system. Water has to reach the pit, the pit needs usable capacity, the pump and check valve must operate reliably, and the discharge must carry water away without freezing or returning to the foundation.

There is no guaranteed age because runtime, debris, installation, maintenance and model quality vary. An aging pump in a high-consequence basement deserves proactive testing and a replacement plan rather than waiting for failure during a storm.
A generator can be excellent backup when it starts reliably, has fuel and powers the correct circuit. A battery system may still cover the gap before generator start, a transfer issue, a pump circuit problem or times when no one is home. The best arrangement depends on how the generator operates.
Groundwater, snowmelt, a high water table, a plumbing or drainage connection, a stuck switch or recirculating discharge are among the possibilities. Note weather, run frequency and outlet flow, then have the full system inspected.
Not necessarily. Oversizing can create rapid cycling and does not fix a restricted discharge, small pit, returning water or inadequate drainage. Capacity should be matched to measured or observed inflow and the installed head.
