Published pump flow drops as vertical lift, pipe length and fittings increase. The installed discharge path matters as much as the box rating.

Backup needs maintenance

Batteries age, terminals corrode and chargers fail. A backup plan includes testing, replacement intervals and knowing what its runtime can and cannot cover.

Short cycling

Rapid on-off cycles can point to a small pit, switch problem, check-valve failure, recirculating discharge or high inflow. Replacing the pump alone may not correct it.

Water has to reach the pit

A powerful pump cannot collect water trapped elsewhere under or above the slab. Drainage design and sump design are connected.

How often should a sump pump be replaced?

There is no guaranteed age because runtime, debris, installation, maintenance and model quality vary. An aging pump in a high-consequence basement deserves proactive testing and a replacement plan rather than waiting for failure during a storm.

Do I need a battery backup if I have a generator?

A generator can be excellent backup when it starts reliably, has fuel and powers the correct circuit. A battery system may still cover the gap before generator start, a transfer issue, a pump circuit problem or times when no one is home. The best arrangement depends on how the generator operates.

Why does my sump pump run when it is not raining?

Groundwater, snowmelt, a high water table, a plumbing or drainage connection, a stuck switch or recirculating discharge are among the possibilities. Note weather, run frequency and outlet flow, then have the full system inspected.

Can a larger pump solve constant running?

Not necessarily. Oversizing can create rapid cycling and does not fix a restricted discharge, small pit, returning water or inadequate drainage. Capacity should be matched to measured or observed inflow and the installed head.
