How to stop a sump discharge freezing this winter.

A frozen discharge disables every pump on the system, backup included. It is the most preventable basement flood there is.

Safety first

Do not pour hot water into a frozen line or use an open flame to thaw pipe. If the line is frozen and the pit is filling, the priority is reducing water reaching the pump and getting help, not improvising a thaw.

Step by step

  1. 01

    Trace the whole line in daylight. Follow the discharge from the pump to the outlet before the snow arrives. You cannot inspect what you have never located, and a surprising number of homeowners do not know where the line ends.

  2. 02

    Look for sags and low spots. Any section that dips holds water after the pump stops, and that standing water is what freezes first and blocks the line. Support or re-lay sagging runs so the pipe falls continuously to the outlet.

  3. 03

    Clear the outlet. Remove soil, leaves, mulch, grass and any vegetation that has grown over the end of the pipe. An outlet that has silted in or been buried by a season of yard work is effectively closed already.

    Confirm the outlet is above where snow piles. Check where snow accumulates and where it is thrown when you clear the drive. An outlet in the middle of a snow pile will be sealed for months.

  5. 05

    Mark the outlet location. Put a stake, flag or tall marker at the outlet so you can find it once everything is white. This one step makes the winter checks realistic rather than theoretical.

  6. 06

    Test the whole system. Fill the pit until the pump runs and walk out to confirm water leaves the far end. Do the same with the primary unplugged so you know the backup also discharges properly.

  7. 07

    Check after snow and thaws. After a heavy snowfall, clear the outlet and the ground around it. During a thaw, confirm water is still coming out when the pump runs. This is a two-minute check that prevents the most common winter basement flood.

  8. 08

    Know your emergency plan. Decide now what you would do if the line froze: where you would reduce incoming water, who you would call, and whether a temporary discharge route exists. Deciding this in February with a filling pit is much harder.

Common questions

How to Winterize a Sump Discharge Line

Will burying the discharge line deeper stop it freezing?

Depth helps only if the buried section still drains completely and the outlet itself stays clear. A buried line that holds standing water, or that ends at a point which gets buried in snow or silts up, still freezes. Continuous fall and a clear, findable outlet matter more than depth alone.

Does a backup pump protect me if the line freezes?

Not if it shares the same discharge, which is the usual arrangement. Both pumps push into one frozen pipe and neither can move water. That is why the line and the outlet, rather than the pump, are the parts to winterize.

What do I do if the line is already frozen?

Reduce the water reaching the pit if you safely can, protect anything on the floor, and get help. Do not use an open flame or force hot water into the pipe. If the basement is filling and electrical equipment may be involved, treat it as a safety situation first.
