Do the exterior work while the ground is still workable: clear and extend roof drainage away from the foundation, correct soil that has settled against the wall, clear and cover window wells, and confirm the sump discharge terminates somewhere that will still drain when there is snow on the ground. Then test the sump and its backup under load before you need them. The reason to do this in autumn is practical: frozen ground makes grading, excavation and discharge work impossible or expensive, and snowmelt arrives while the soil below is still frozen and cannot absorb it.

A rain-on-snow event compounds it, adding rainfall to an existing snowpack over the same frozen ground.

Roof water and grading, while you still can
Roof area concentrates an enormous volume into a few outlets. A downspout ending beside the wall delivers that volume directly to the foundation, and it is among the least expensive problems to fix. Extending discharge away from the house, clearing gutters before leaves freeze in them, and confirming that any buried roof drain actually flows to a working outlet are all autumn tasks.
Grading is the companion correction. Soil settles over years, and a slope that once carried water away can quietly reverse. Walks, patios and driveways that have settled toward the house do the same thing in a harder material. Adding and compacting soil to restore a slope away from the wall requires ground you can dig, which is precisely what winter removes.

Window wells, bulkheads and openings

Bulkheads and exterior stairwells deserve the same attention. A stairwell drain packed with debris turns the stairwell into a basin against a door that was never designed to be watertight. If the drain cannot be cleared or does not appear to go anywhere, that is worth investigating before there is water standing in it.
Test the system under water, not by ear
A sump that hums when you lift the float has not been tested. Pour water into the pit until the pump starts on its own, then confirm water is actually leaving the far end of the discharge. Doing that check in October tells you whether the pump, the float, the check valve and the entire discharge line work as a system, while there is still time to correct any of them.
Then test the backup the same way, with the primary pump unplugged, and confirm the battery holds a charge. Finally, walk the discharge outlet: it needs to terminate where meltwater and ice will not block it and where the water will not simply run back toward the house. A discharge that cannot drain between cycles will hold water, freeze solid, and take every pump on the system out of service at the moment they are needed.
